In the busy world of educational leadership, days are often filled with important decisions, challenges to overcome and countless responsibilities. Sometimes, in the midst of focusing on what needs to be done, it's easy to overlook the many reasons to be thankful.
Today, principals and leadership staff with the Randolph County School System (RCSS) took a few moments to pause, reflect and celebrate the people, experiences and purpose that make their work so meaningful during a special professional development activity, “The Colors of Gratitude: Looking at Our Leadership Through Fall Leaves.”
Using the changing colors of fall leaves as inspiration, the activity encouraged leaders to reflect on the different aspects of gratitude in their leadership journeys. Each color represented a unique opportunity for reflection:
Red – Passion: Appreciation for the opportunity to serve as a principal.
Orange – People: Recognizing the individuals within their school communities who make a difference.
Yellow – Joy: Remembering moments that reaffirm why they chose a career in education.
Green – Growth: Appreciating challenges and difficult seasons for the lessons they provide.
Golden – Purpose: Recognizing the special things about their schools that can sometimes be taken for granted.
Participants reflected on these prompts and shared their thoughts with colleagues. The activity provided an opportunity to recognize that even during challenging seasons, there is much to appreciate in the work of leading a school.
The reflection also served as a reminder that the impact of educational leadership is not always immediately visible. Every day, school leaders have the opportunity to make a difference through the students they serve, the teachers who inspire, the colleagues who encourage and the families who place their trust in their schools.
As a lasting reminder, each leaders leaf was added to a tree in the hallway of Central Office —a simple reminder to focus not only on what needs to be improved but also on all that is going well.
At RCSS, we recognize that strong schools are built through the dedication, passion and commitment of the people who lead them. Taking time to practice gratitude reminds us of the importance of appreciating the journey, celebrating the people around us and remembering the purpose behind the work we do each day.
Lead with gratitude. Lead with purpose. Lead with a thankful heart.
* As a token of our appreciation to our school leaders, a homemade spread of desserts was provided at the meeting as well. We are so grateful for the hard work our principals exhibit on a daily basis!
