When you walked into the Level Cross Elementary fifth-grade math classroom, the excitement could be seen and felt! Students were actively collaborating, problem-solving, discussing their thinking, and putting their mathematical knowledge to the test as they worked together to escape the room!

This wasn’t just a game—it was rigorous, standards-aligned learning in action! Students were challenged to use their understanding of NC.5.OA.3 to:

Generate numerical patterns using given rules

Identify relationships between corresponding terms

Work collaboratively to solve problems

Form ordered pairs from corresponding terms

Graph ordered pairs on coordinate planes

Apply higher-order thinking and mathematical reasoning

The 5.OA.3 Escape Room included five challenging activities, with students working in pairs or groups of three to use their knowledge of numerical patterns and coordinate grids to solve each challenge. With approximately an hour to complete the escape room, students had to communicate, persevere, think critically, and support one another along the way.

What was most exciting to see was that students weren't simply finding answers—they were explaining their thinking, applying mathematical rules, and learning from one another.
