Good evening staff members and parents of the Randolph County School System,
This is Stephen Gainey. I am calling to make you aware of a cybersecurity incident involving Canvas, which is a state-wide learning management system used by the Randolph County School System and other public-school systems throughout North Carolina. Our school system was made aware of this issue on 5/5/26. Since that time, leaders of the Randolph County School System have been trying to learn more about the possible impact of this cybersecurity incident on data related to our staff members, students, and/or parents. Instructure, which is the parent company for Canvas, has been investigating this situation since last week. However, at this time, our school system has not been made aware of any specific data associated with the school system that was impacted by this cybersecurity incident. Please also note that Canvas was turned off by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the Randolph County School System on 5/7/26 as a precautionary measure. However, after much investigation by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Instructure, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction restored access to Canvas by schools on 5/11/26. Due to this decision at the state level, the Randolph County School System restored access to Canvas by our schools on 5/11/26 as well. To the best of our knowledge at this time, this cybersecurity incident did not result from any action, or lack of action, by the Randolph County School System or the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Our school system will continue to stay in touch with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction to monitor any future developments regarding this cybersecurity incident.

Sin embargo, tras una exhaustiva investigación por parte del Departamento de Instrucción Pública de Carolina del Norte e Instructure, el Departamento de Instrucción Pública de Carolina del Norte restableció el acceso a Canvas para las escuelas el 11 de mayo de 2026. Debido a esta decisión a nivel estatal, el Sistema Escolar del Condado de Randolph restableció el acceso a Canvas para nuestras escuelas el 11 de mayo de 2026. Hasta donde sabemos, este incidente de ciberseguridad no fue consecuencia de ninguna acción u omisión por parte del Sistema Escolar del Condado de Randolph ni del Departamento de Instrucción Pública de Carolina del Norte. Nuestro sistema escolar continuará en contacto con el Departamento de Instrucción Pública de Carolina del Norte para monitorear cualquier novedad relacionada con este incidente.
