Ms. Davis’ 2nd grade class at John Lawrence Elementary School has created a special bond with the seniors of the Archdale Senior Center. Through collaboration with Communities in Schools, they have been partnered with a group of wonderful seniors who they have had the pleasure of becoming pen pals with. Over the course of the school year, this second grade class has been writing letters and making holiday crafts each month to send to the senior center. In return, the seniors have been sending letters to the students sharing things like their favorite pastimes and how they celebrated holidays when they were kids.
Recently, the second grade students were able to go on a field trip to the Archdale Senior Center to visit their pen pals and meet them in person! They had an absolutely wonderful time visiting with the friends they have been corresponding with over the past few months. They enjoyed doing activities such as word searches and coloring sheets as well as sharing a snack together. One second grader exclaimed, “The people here are so kind! I want to bring my whole family and my dog here!” After their snack, the group took a photo together and proceeded to play some lively games of ring toss and corn hole. Though the senior center was a bit louder than it probably is on a normal day, it was filled with love and laughter as generational gaps were filled and community bridges were built! Thank you to Communities in Schools for sponsoring this amazing program at John Lawrence Elementary!
