Second Graders at Hopewell Elementary Take on the “Save Fred” Challenge!

Hopewell Elementary second graders recently participated in a hands-on STEM activity called Save Fred. Fred, a gummy worm, was stranded on top of a “mountain” without his life preserver (a gummy ring) and needed help getting safely into his boat (a plastic cup). Students worked in small teams using only paper clips to move Fred, put on his life preserver, and get him into the boat—without letting the mountain crumble!

This engaging challenge encouraged problem-solving, teamwork, communication, and perseverance. Students had fun while practicing critical thinking and collaboration skills—important building blocks for future learning.
