On the 25th anniversary of September 11, 2001, Grays Chapel Elementary School paused to remember, honor, and reflect on one of the most significant and heartbreaking days in American history.
With students, staff, families, first responders and community members gathered in Sandy’s Garden, the school community paid special tribute to former Grays Chapel student and Randolph County hero Sandy Waugh Bradshaw, while also honoring the countless brave men and women who gave their lives in service to others on that tragic day.
Sandy’s Garden serves as a lasting reminder of courage, sacrifice, and the strength of the human spirit. As the flags planted by Grays Chapel students stood proudly throughout the garden, each one became a symbol of remembrance and gratitude—a reminder that the freedoms and opportunities we experience today have come at a tremendous cost for many.
The remembrance ceremony was filled with moments of reflection, pride, and hope. Students came together to sing “God Bless America,” creating a moving tribute to the country they were gathered to honor. When the song officially ended, something especially touching happened: the students continued singing together, acapella. Their unplanned voices filled Sandy’s Garden, creating a beautiful and heartfelt moment that was felt by everyone in attendance.
For Grays Chapel students, the ceremony was more than a history lesson. It was an opportunity to understand the importance of remembering those who served, sacrificed, and demonstrated extraordinary courage during one of our nation's darkest moments.
As the flags gently wave in Sandy’s Garden, the Grays Chapel community is reminded that remembrance is more than looking back. It is about carrying the lessons of that day forward—choosing kindness, showing gratitude, caring for one another, and appreciating the freedoms we share.
Twenty-five years later, the message remains just as important:
May we never take this day for granted. May we always remember with grateful hearts, live with kind hearts, and honor the heroes who gave everything.
God bless America.
Never Forget. ❤️🤍💙
