The Virtual Academy at Randolph - Frequently Asked Questions

What is virtual instruction?
Virtual Instruction means the student takes all of his/her courses in a virtual setting. In the Randolph County School System, The Virtual Academy at Randolph will provide a virtual instruction option for our Kindergarten through eighth-grade students (K-8). As students work through their daily schedule a certified online teacher provides them with meaningful and timely feedback and instruction through the use of our Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).  While students have flexibility about where and when to complete assignments, they are expected to log in and work every school day, attend required live teaching sessions using Google Meet, and meet course deadlines established by their teacher.  Our school will follow the Randolph County School System’s calendar.

Who is eligible to attend?
Any Randolph County School System student, who will be in grades K-8 for the 2021-2022 academic year, may apply to attend. Any student who is living within the Randolph County School System attendance area is eligible to attend.

We currently live within the Randolph County School Systems school district, but are not enrolled in a Randolph County School, are my children eligible?
Any student who lives within the Randolph County School System attendance area is eligible to attend The Virtual Academy at Randolph.  Complete the online application by June 21, 2021. Paper applications are also available at the district office.

How much does it cost?
There are no additional costs to attend The Virtual Academy at Randolph for residents who live within the Randolph County School System attendance district beyond regular school fees.

Who are the teachers?
All teachers are employed by the Randolph County School System.

How do I enroll? 
Any student who chooses the option to attend the Virtual Academy must:
Complete the online application by June 21, 2021. Paper applications are also available at the district office  

What is the application and admission process for the Virtual Academy at Randolph?  
Complete the online application by June 21, 2021.  If you are unable to complete the online application please call 336-633-5041. Parents will be notified by the first week of June of their child’s acceptance into The Virtual Academy at Randolph. 

When I sign up now, am I committing to a full year in the Virtual Academy of Randolph?
Yes. Registration for the 2021-2022 school year will be for the full school year. Consistency is important for our elementary and middle school students and committing to a full year in The Virtual Academy at Randolph allows them to build a relationship with their teachers and thrive in the program. 

What classes will be offered?   
All Virtual Academy classes are aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and the Extended Content Standards include English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Electives. 

What is needed for my student to be successful in the virtual academy?
Students will need dependable internet access. Connection should be fast enough to support video conferencing without buffering.  
Students and parents will need a valid email address that is checked regularly.
Students will need scheduled time daily to commit to school work.

Are Virtual Academy students required to come on campus for testing? 
Yes. Virtual Academy students will be required to be physically on campus at the school site for all state and federal testing. 

Will my student be eligible if my student has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan? 
Yes. Students who have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will receive specially designed instruction and/or related services as determined by the IEP team from a licensed special education teacher and related service providers, if appropriate.  Accommodations and/or modifications on an IEP or 504 plan will be delivered by all teachers as indicated on the student’s plan. 
Students who receive services through an IEP must attend virtual sessions scheduled by the special education team lead and/or related service providers.

Will my student be eligible if my student is an English Learner (EL) or identified as Academically or Intellectually Gifted (AIG)?  
Yes. Students will continue to receive related services in the Virtual Academy by an ESL teacher or an AIG specialist.

What is the teacher/student ratio in the virtual academy? 
The virtual academy will follow state guidelines pertaining to class size ratios.

Do families need to provide their own personal computers for students who attend The Virtual Academy at Randolph? 
No. In order to ensure students can access resources and programs provided by The Virtual Academy at Randolph, the school will provide a Chromebook for each student who is enrolled in the school.

Do families need to provide their own internet access for students who attend The Virtual Academy at Randolph?
Yes. Students will need dependable internet access. Connection should be fast enough to support video conferencing without buffering.
