-"Social Networking" is the use of electronic communication to create online communities for sharing information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (e.g. photos, videos).
-"Social Media" refers to the websites and applications that enable users to participate in social networking.
-The Randolph County School System (RCSS) utilizes social media as a communications tool. At the district level, RCSS has an official Facebook page, official Twitter account, official Instagram account, and official YouTube account. Individual schools and school groups have the option to establish official Facebook pages, official Twitter accounts, and official Instagram accounts.
-In RCSS, social media accounts are categorized as one of the following: PERSONAL or SCHOOL-CONTROLLED.
-RCSS employees may have PERSONAL social media pages/accounts, but they are prohibited from using these pages/accounts to "friend" or communicate with current students.
-RCSS employees may NOT use PERSONAL social media to "follow" current students, have current students as "followers," or communicate with current students.
-RCSS employees MAY use SCHOOL-CONTROLLED social media to "follow" current students, have current students as "followers," or communicate with current students.
PERSONAL social media pages/accounts are characterized by the following two criteria:
- A personal email address is used to set up the page/account.
- The page/account has not been "registered" with RCSS. To register, the page/account owner must complete and submit a Social Media Account Request Form to the school principal, who signs the form and submits it to the RCSS public information officer for approval.
SCHOOL-CONTROLLED social media pages/accounts are characterized by the following two criteria:
- An RCSS email address is used to set up the page/account.
- The page/account has been "registered" with RCSS. To register, the page/account owner must complete and submit a Social Media Account Request Form to the school principal, who signs the form and submits it to the RCSS public information officer for approval.
