Wheatmore High School students may take advantage of on-line learning opportunities through the NC Department of Public Instruction's North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS), and UNC's iSchool program. Through a variety of online management systems, students may take a wide variety of courses that they may not otherwise have access to.

While distance learning opportunities provide temendous benefits to students, in regards to course offerings, student centered instruction, flexible scheduling, heightened critical thinking and written communication skills, there are specific learner characteristics that promote greater student success in on-line learning environments. Enrollment in these courses requires the approval of the school principal, the school counselor and the student's legal guardian.

On-line students should be:

  • Skilled in areas of responsibility and self regulation
  • Able to meet deadlines
  • Acadenically motivated, goal oriented
  • Grade level reading ability
  • Proficient in written communication
  • Skilled in use of computers for word processing, email, and internet research

Parental support is very important and students would greatly benefit by having computer and internet access at home.
