Seagrove School Past and Present

Old Seagrove School

On April 3, 1911, the community of Seagrove built a school at their own expense. The first Seagrove School used a vacated flourmill.  All neighbors agreed to provide the labor and money necessary to remodel the building.  Seagrove School opened the winter of 1911, with one teacher.  By 1916, the enrollment had increased to the point where four teachers were hired.

In 1918, the school moved from the original site, to a new building.  The school was located on a site east of the railroad.  Due to the large number of students being served, the first school bus was purchase for the area in 1924.  With the new influx of pupils, the school was overcrowded.   The old schoolhouse and grounds were sold.

A new brick school was built and opened for classes in the fall of 1926. It was located where the present school now stands.  The school contained 12 classrooms, rest room facilities, an office, and an auditorium.  The classes included grades 1-7 of grammar school and grades 8-11 of high school.

Seagrove High School burned on March 24,1934. It was thought to have been caused by electrical wiring on the stage of the auditorium.  All books, supplies, and records were destroyed.  For the remainder of the school year classes were held in community stores and churches.  During the summer the school was rebuilt according to the old plans and was ready for occupancy by the fall term.

Several additions have been made to the school since it was rebuilt in 1934.  In the fall of 1970, Southwestern Randolph High School opened and Seagrove students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades attended this school.  The 9th graders at Seagrove School, began attending Southwestern Randolph in 1975.  Seagrove housed primary, elementary and junior high students until the fall of 1990.  At this time, Southwestern Randolph Middle School opened for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students.

In 1991, construction of a new school building began on the existing site.  The old Seagrove campus was demolished except for one wing.  During construction classes were housed in mobile units and part of the remaining campus during this time.  The new structure was completed in 1992.

Today, the proud tradition of Seagrove School continues.  It serves as an elementary school with kindergarten through fifth grade students.
