I am Marilyn Elaine Hyatt.  Welcome to my website.   This semester I am currently teaching 10th grade students.

You may reach me by phone at the school 336 824-2351 before 8:00 in the morning and until 4:00.
I will be in classes for the rest of the day except during my planning period which is from 9:30 through 10:55.  Please feel free to call at these times.

In the tenth grade the literary focus is world literature.  Students will be reading mostly novels that they may checkout from the school media center.  There is also a focus on vocabulary.  Students will have ten vocabulary words each week.  They will be asked to learn to spell and write a brief definition on a test which will be given once a week.  The vocabulary is cumulative.  A large test will be given at the end of every three weeks.  This test will be a multiple choice test in which students will be asked to match the vocabulary word with the correct definition.  Studying the vocabulary is the majority of homework required for this class.

Writing is also an important part  of the tenth grade curriculum.  Students are prepared to take a state writing test in March.  All students who are enrolled in a tenth grade homeroom are required by the state to take this test.  The test consists of writing an either a definition or cause and effect essay.  As a result of the test, there is a great deal of concentration on writing.

Students who have missed over five days of school must complete a waiver if the absence is for a documented illness or other emergency.  Other absences must be made up before school or after school. The Learning Center is available 5 days a week to make up time.  The Learning Center hours are Monday through Thursday from 3:15 to 5:00, and then on Friday from 3:15-4:30.  The Learning Center is also available for tutoring.  I tutor students on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 4:00.
