Grays Chapel Torch Run

Grays Chapel Torch Run

Grays Chapel Elementary students are participating in a year-long reading challenge to read 1,000,000 minutes as a school team.  Students are on different teams (Brazil, Greece, Japan and USA).  There is one class from each grade level on each team.

Students are on the same team with their book buddies who they meet with two mornings a month for 30 minutes at the beginning of the school day to read.  Teachers are entering minutes read into a shared Google sheet.  Teams in the lead are recognized each month.  At the conclusion of each quarter, the team in the lead gets to participate in a "torch run" across campus.

The student in each "winning" class who has read the most minutes carries the torch for their grade level.  The purpose is to emphasize teamwork to reach a goal and, of course, to increase reading and reading comprehension.

So far this year the students have read a collective total of 700,413 minutes!

Shown above are photos from the school's most recent Torch Run on February 7, 2017.
